STUCK ON STUPID

Hat tip: Mychal Massie

Who is Karen Pomer?

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/
2005-09-28-sheehan-mccain_x.htm

Cindy Sheehan meets with John McCain. Calls him
a warmonger. Calls Bush a bunch more names. But
something actually unusual in this article caught my eye.

"Karen Pomer, a spokeswoman for Sheehan, said,
"She's exhausted and she's not feeling well, but she
intends to meet her obligations." "

I thought...now who is this Karen Pomer person and
who is paying her bills to be Sheehan's "spokesperson"
-- this little tour of Sheehan's.....hotel rooms, taxi cabs,
airplane fare, and now a publicist....is costing somebody
a pretty penny.

So just who is this Karen Pomer who is escorting
Ms. Cindy Sheehan around and getting her all of
this press? Check this out -- she is one of those
mid-level leftists....an operative....a soldier, if you
will, who gets stories out there into the press.
Like the Cindy Sheehan piece.

Look at almost any radical group -- Code Pink,
"Rainbow Sisters", MoveON, United for Peace
and Justice
....and somehow, she is there.....particularly
recognized lately with Code Pink....but here is a
list of quotes a mile long from Pomer:

Note to Howard -- You have to WIN to appoint judges, pal.

My quote in response to Howard Dean's "off the meds" quotation this morning in the Washington Post threatening a filibuster if the President nominates Priscilla Owen or Janice Rogers Brown.

"It would appear that the extreme left has yanked the fundraising choke chain on Howard Dean. That's the only rational explanation for his irrational statements regarding the President's next pick for the Supreme Court," said Kay Daly, president, Coalition for a Fair Judiciary. "Apparently Howard Dean does not recall that the American people have utterly rejected the Democrats' obstruction of judicial nominations in the last several elections. It would appear that the consequences of losing those elections is lost on the DNC chairman and his puppetmasters on the Left. Memo to Howard: You have to WIN the presidency to be on the nomination side of the equation."

Feddie for Sandy's seat!

If you all haven't been to Southern Appeal, well, you
just haven't seen the best of the best of the best of the best
of the legal bloggers. The site a nice mix of the
cerebral and the sublime...with a dash of Southern Comfort.

So if you haven't seen it, go there, and then THIS (Feddie
for the Supremes)
will make sense....

Don't get stuck on stupid, Senator!!!!

QUOTE OF THE CENTURY --

DON'T GET STUCK ON STUPID!!!

Best account comes from "Radio Blogger" here....

From Tuesday's Radio Blogger:

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin held a press conference a little
bit ago, and started losing control to a media pool assembled
that was showing signs of panic, due to the previous incompetence
in the region by the local and state government. Lt. Gen. Russell
Honore stepped in and literally took over.

Here's what he had to say:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Honore: And Mr. Mayor, let's go back, because I can see
right now, we're setting this up as he said, he said, we said.
All right? We are not going to go, by order of the mayor and
the governor, and open the convention center for people to
come in. There are buses there. Is that clear to you? Buses
parked. There are 4,000 troops there. People come, they get
on a bus, they get on a truck, they move on. Is that clear? Is
that clear to the public?

Female reporter: Where do they move on...

Honore: That's not your business.

Male reporter: But General, that didn't work the
first time...

Honore: Wait a minute. It didn't work the first
time. This ain't the first time. Okay? If...we don't
control Rita, you understand? So there are a lot of
pieces of it that's going to be worked out. You got
good public servants working through it. Let's get a
little trust here, because you're starting to act like
this is your problem. You are carrying the message,
okay? What we're going to do is have the buses staged.
The initial place is at the convention center. We're
not going to announce other places at this time, until
we get a plan set, and we'll let people know where those
locations are, through the government, and through
public announcements. Right now, to handle the number
of people that want to leave, we've got the capacity. You
will come to the convention center. There are soldiers
there from the 82nd Airborne, and from the Louisiana
National Guard. People will be told to get on the bus,
and we will take care of them. And where they go will
be dependent on the capacity in this state. We've got
our communications up. And we'll tell them where to go.
And when they get there, they'll be able to get a chance,
an opportunity to get registered, and so they can let their
families know where they are. But don't start panic here.
Okay? We've got a location. It is in the front of the convention
center, and that's where we will use to migrate people
from it, into the system.

Male reporter: General Honore, we were told that Berman
Stadium on the west bank would be another staging area...

Honore: Not to my knowledge. Again, the current place,
I just told you one time, is the convention center. Once we
complete the plan with the mayor, and is approved by
the governor, then we'll start that in the next 12-24 hours.
And we understand that there's a problem in getting
communications out. That's where we need your help. But let's
not confuse the questions with the answers. Buses at the
convention center will move our citizens, for whom we have
sworn that we will support and defend...and we'll move
them on. Let's not get stuck on the last storm. You're asking
last storm questions for people who are concerned about the
future storm. Don't get stuck on stupid, reporters.
We are moving forward. And don't confuse the people
please. You are part of the public message. So help us get the
message straight. And if you don't understand, maybe
you'll confuse it to the people. That's why we like follow-up
questions. But right now, it's the convention center, and move on.

Male reporter: General, a little bit more about why that's
happening this time, though, and did not have that last time...

Honore: You are stuck on stupid. I'm not going to
answer that question. We are going to deal with Rita.
This is public information that people are depending
on the government to put out. This is the way we've got
to do it. So please. I apologize to you, but let's talk about
the future. Rita is happening. And right now, we need to
get good, clean information out to the people that they
can use. And we can have a conversation on the side about
the past, in a couple of months.
- - - - - - - - -

I think the General just started a movement, and he may
not even realize it. Every time a reporter, in any situation,
starts spinning, or completely misses the point, they need
to be peppered with, "Don't get stuck on stupid."

I'd pay money to see David Gregory in the White House Press
Corps foaming at the mouth over something trivial Scott McClellan
said, and have McClellan say, "David, you're stuck on stupid. I'm not
going to answer that."

I'd have fallen out of my chair if John Roberts would have listened
to Joe Biden ramble on, and said, "Don't get stuck on stupid, Senator."

I can see the bumper stickers now. I can even see those stupid
rubber wristbands with DGSOS etched in them. I love General Honore.

Three cheers for Operation Offset!

An excellent project from House Majority Leader Tom Delay --
Operation Offset.

Given that we are talking megabucks to clean up the aftermath and
rebuild after Hurricane Katrina (and heaven knows what will happen
in the coming days with Rita on a beeline for the Gulf Coast).....and
given that Congress is putting drunken sailors to shame in the spending
department....Delay is finally saying "ENOUGH."

For those items that are needed in this emergency spending, there
needs to be an "offset" so that the budget isn't busted any further.

Funny, that's what happens in our family budget in the Daly household.
We aren't printing money in the garage, ya know.

So anyhoo, here is a list that the folks at the Republican Study Committee
have come up with in Operation Offset. (If you have any additional offset
suggestions, I'd be happy to pass them on to some friends I have over there
-- just email them to me through this website.)

Ruth Bader Ginsburg told an audience Wednesday that she doesn't l
ike the idea of being the only female justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.
But in choosing to fill one of the two open positions on the court, "any
woman will not do," she said. There are "some women who might be
appointed who would not advance human rights or women's rights,"
Ginsburg told those gathered at the New York City Bar Association. . . .
"I have a list of highly qualified women, but the president has not
consulted me," Ginsburg said during a brief interview Wednesday night.

Does danger lurk in your kitchen?

Picture this: a mother is cooking in her kitchen. Are the pots and pans she
is cooking in sloooowwwwlllly endangering her family's health? The
folks in the scare-mongering biz certainly want you to think so!

Several major media outlets, such as NBC's Today show, have suggested
that a chemical compound (PFOA) used to make Teflon and other
non-stick coatings may pose a risk to consumers who cook with the
Teflon-coated cookware.

Also, two law firms recently filed a $5-billion class-action suit, saying
DuPont failed to warn consumers about the “dangers” of
perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) – a chemical that is supposedly in Teflon.

The fact of the matter is, you have nothing to worry about. Research,
including a peer-reviewed study published in Environmental Science &
Technology, show cooking with Teflon-coated pots or pans does not release
PFOA.

As usual, though, reporters are confusing the issue – and scaring lots
of folks. They’re saying that the “Teflon chemical” might cause cancer, so your
cookware may not be safe.

Guess they haven't read the overwhelming number of articles and reports
to the contrary:

He was at the Grassy Knoll, too.....

From coverage over the past several days it appears the Left is in meltdown mode. They’ve already accused John Roberts of supporting abortion clinic bombers, now they’ll try to link him to plight of those visibly suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Next they’ll be blaming him for last year’s South Pacific Tsunami, 9/11, Pearl Harbor and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

“Leahy said he watched the scenes of hardship on television with a growing sense of anger over the inability to deliver services to those who depend most on the government, issues he said would come up during the Roberts hearings. ‘We'll have legitimate questions as to the authority of the federal government -- the central authority of the government -- but also the ability of individuals to seek redress if they don't get the help that they expect,’ Leahy said.” – Rick Klein, Boston Globe, 9/7/05.

“The hurricane served as a stark reminder that many Americans remain politically powerless and economically repressed, despite laws designed to help in areas like education, voting, employment, and housing, said Wade Henderson, executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. He said he and Representative John Lewis, a Georgia Democrat and veteran civil rights leader, will refer to the scenes from Louisiana during their testimony on Roberts before the Judiciary Committee next week. '’They're a reminder that we really do live in a divided society, where race and class are factors, are part of daily life,’ Henderson said. '’What we know about John Roberts's record suggests ambivalence at best, hostility at worse, to enforcement of the nation's civil rights laws.’” – Rick Klein, Boston Globe, 9/7/05.

"The connection is obvious. The images after Hurricane Katrina show we still live in a society where significant racial inequities exist. We believe John Roberts' record on civil rights ... is clearly not the direction our country needs to head now." – Ben Brandzel, advocacy director for Moveon.org, USA Today, 9/8/05.

“The events of the past week have only underscored that we need Supreme Court justices who value the role of the courts in protecting individuals' rights and freedoms, [and] who understand the nature of discrimination." – Ralph Neas, president of People for the American Way, Knight-Ridder, 9/5/05.

“George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” – Rapper Kanye West, NBC, 9/2/05.

“[Harvard Law School Professor Alan] Dershowitz accused the late Chief Justice of being an anti-Semite and "start[ing] his career by being a kind of Republican thug who pushed and shoved to keep African-American and Hispanic voters from voting.” – Fox News Channel, 9/3/05.

JOHN ROBERTS FOR CHIEF JUSTICE!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 5, 2005

CFFJ PRAISES THE NOMINATION OF JOHN ROBERTS
TO CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Coalition for a Fair Judiciary today praised the President’s choice of D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge John Roberts to be the 17th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Kay Daly, president of CFFJ, said the following:

“The decision to nominate Judge John Roberts to be Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court is an excellent choice. The American Bar Association unanimously rated Judge Roberts well qualified for the Court and one of the determinations for that rating is judicial temperament. (http://www.abanet.org/scfedjud/)

“John Roberts, having clerked for Chief Justice Rehnquist, has been likened to Chief Rehnquist often in his style of judging and will undoubtedly build upon the foundation of order, efficiency and comity so solidly built by the Chief Justice. Judge John Roberts has the keen intellect, calm impartiality, even temperament, sound legal judgment and highest integrity necessary in a Supreme Court justice.

“We remain hopeful that the din from the Left -- from making non-stop demands for nothing less that a co-nomination to the endless carping over documents -- will quiet down, if for no other reason, out of respect for the passing of Chief Justice Rehnquist. Given that whole forests’worth of paper have not satisfied these Leftists, it seems close to futile to hope that the process to fill the O’Connor seat will degenerate into yet another whinefest. But hope springs eternal.

“We congratulate the President for the care he took in making this decision and Judge Roberts for this extraordinary opportunity. This is one nominee who is not going to join the secret decoder ring club by emanating in some microscopic penumbra and he will follow in Rehnquist’s steps with distinction. We look forward to President Bush’s nomination for the seat vacated by Sandra Day O’Connor, hopeful that the President will continue to keep his promise made to the American people and continue to nominate orginalists to the Court.”

The Coalition for a Fair Judiciary is a 501(C)4 organization (http://www.fairjudiciary.com/) comprised of more than 100 grassroots organizations dedicated to supporting qualified, capable federal judicial nominees who are committed to fair and accurate interpretation of existing law. Judicial activism, characterized by rulings that create law rather than apply the law, has had a detrimental impact on American society and commerce. We seek to support federal judicial nominees who, in the words of Socrates, will “hear courteously, answer wisely, consider soberly and decide impartially.”

Hail to the Chief -- Chief Justice Rehnquist (1924-2005)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Connie Hair (202) 255-5125
September 3, 2005 Kay Daly (703) 822-9831

HAIL TO THE CHIEF (JUSTICE)
Chief Justice William Rehnquist 1924 - 2005

(Washington, DC) – The Coalition for a Fair Judiciary tonight acknowledged the passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist, the 16th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and lauded his years of public service from WWII veteran to Chief Justice.

“Our deepest condolences to the Rehnquist family for their loss. And for the nation, it
is the end of an era,” said Kay Daly, president of the Coalition for a Fair Judiciary. “Clearly, Justice Rehnquist will be remembered as a consensus builder, a tireless champion for a strong, independent judiciary and an advocate for federalism and the rule of law. This was a Chief who made the Court more efficient.”

The official Supreme Court biography describes Chief Justice Rehnquist as follows:

Chief Justice of the United States, William Rehnquist was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, October 1, 1924. He married Natalie Cornell, now deceased, and has three children – James, Janet and Nancy. From 1943 –46, he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He received a B.A., M.A. and LL.B. from Stanford University and an M.A. from Harvard University. He served as a law clerk for Justice Robert H. Jackson of the Supreme Court of the United States during the 1951 and 1952 terms, and practiced law in Phoenix, Arizona from 1953 to 1969. He served as Assistant Attorney General, Office of Legal Counsel from 1969 to 1971. President Nixon nominated him to the Supreme Court and he took his seat as an Associate Justice on January 7, 1972. Nominated as Chief Justice by President Reagan, he assumed that office on September 26, 1986.

“This was a Chief Justice who embraced the concepts of federalism, states rights and the very basic tenets of the Constitution,” said Daly. “The next Chief Justice should build on that foundation.”

Daly continued, “There is no doubt that one vacancy on the Court has made for a long, hot summer. Given the hysteria already exhibited by the Left over one vacancy, two vacancies may cause an antacid supply shortage. In two elections, the President made no secret that he intended to nominate constitutionalists, not judicial activists to the bench. His track record of judicial nominations to the federal bench shows that he is a man of his word.”

“The Left, apparently unaware of the outcome of the last two elections, will continue to attempt to dictate to the President the terms of the nomination and confirmation process. The Constitution, however, is clear on that matter which is quite inconvenient to those on the Left who are attempting to mask judicial activists as ‘consensus nominees’ and any other choice as ‘outside the mainstream.’ It is nonsense to believe that Senators Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid, along with their friends at NOW, the ACLU and People for the American Way have the slightest notion what ‘the mainstream’ of America believes,” said Daly.

“ Quite frankly, it is immaterial whether the nominee is conservative, liberal, moderate, middle-of-the-road or the-chicken-that-crossed-the-road – those are political labels that are germane only to the legislative branch and Senator Charles Schumer’s ideological litmus test,” said Daly. “The relevant questions for these Supreme Court nominees are first, whether or not they are qualified for the position and second, will they apply the Constitution as it is written or will they legislate from the bench using a secret decoder ring to emanate in microscopic penumbras.”
